Safari on Windows

In case you haven’t been following the Apple news flowing in from the WWDC, Apple has officially announced the public beta of Safari for Windows. Very interesting move and very bold performance claims where they claim beating IE by 2x and Mozilla/FireFox by 1.6x in their benchmarks.

Unfortunately this means yet another browser to test on for those of us writing web applications. Let’s hope Apple keeps this puppy up to date.

  1. Didn’t we have to test on Safari anyway? Hell, half of Microsoft is running Mac laptops these days. ;)I’m not really sure I see the point of this move, though.

  2. keep it up to date? compared to what? Its way ahead of IE already, and passed ACID2 before Firefox or Opera. The 3.0 version includes SVG. I think you can make the case that Apple is on the leading edge of standards compatibility with Safari.

  3. RE: testingSure, we have test on Safari on Mac all day, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will work the same on Windows. I assume they share the majority of the code-base, but obviously the actual rendering is done per platform so…RE: keep it up to dateI just mean as up to date as the Mac version. So, for example, the Mac isn’t three minor versions ahead with some fixes and the Windows version is stuck. Again, if the majority of the code-base is shared, this shouldn’t be a problem.Cheers,Drew
